Deborah Frieze is an author, entrepreneur and social activist. As former co-president of The Berkana Institute and co-founder of the Berkana Exchange, Debbie joined Berkana in 2002 to help bring Berkana’s vision into the world and grow the Institute. She serves as a board member and is leading several initiatives, including: Feeding Ourselves Sustainably, a youth-driven community of practice in North America; Swaraj University, an alternative learning institute in India; and multiple Illumination and Thought Leadership projects, including publications and online media; and consulting as part of the Berkana Collaborative. The pioneering leaders of the Berkana Exchange community are the subject of her book, Walk Out Walk On: A Learning Journey Through Communities Daring to Live the Future Now, co-authored with Margaret Wheatley (forthcoming April 2011).

Previously, Debbie was a partner and founding member of ZEFER, an Internet services firm that integrated business strategy, experience design, technology and program management. She has worked in partnership with the Mastery Foundation, leading peace and reconciliation programs in Northern Ireland and Israel. She serves as a consultant and advisor to numerous grassroot organizations both locally and abroad. Debbie has an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.
